The time-honoured Breeders' Plate has been the first two-year-old stakes race run in Australia for over a century. It's twice as old as the Golden Slipper !
Since it's inauguration in 1906 no horse had ever run faster than Murtajill did when he won the 2006 Breeders' Plate in an impressive 57 seconds neat.
Two starts later he posted another race record, this time in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes winning by over three-lengths.
As a three-year-old Murtajill was so impressive he was rated the second highest of his generation only to star galloper Weekend Hussler, ahead of Group 1 gallopers Light Fantastic, Swiss Ace, Forensics etc.
Apart from the fact he is by the best son of Danehill – seven-time Group 1 winner Rock Of Gibraltar – Murtajill's dam is none other than the extraordinary Skating. A dual Group 1 winner who emulated both Emancipation and Sunline winning the Doncaster Handicap. Skating has since gone on to become a blue-hen broodmare, producing an incredible seven stakes performers including Murtajill, Sunset Rain and the Magic Millions hero Bradbury's Luck.
Having made headlines well before he raced establishing a new record price for a weanling- A.$660,000 at the Magic Millions National Sale in 2005. Murtajill's first crop foals have impressed breeders, with most bearing a striking physical likeness to their sire and the majority also carrying the dominant 'grey' gene of their famous granddam Skating.
