Patinack 1,2 in Australian Oaks
SMALL MINDS POWERS HOME IN OAKS
Patinack Farm enjoyed classic success when SMALL MINDS powered home to land the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1) at Morphettville this afternoon. One of three runners in the race for Patinack, Small Minds was forced to race three wide for much of the 2006 metres but she kept coming in the straight and proved too strong for her rivals. Stablemate No Evidence Needed was game in defeat, running on in the straight to finish a close second having made up several lengths in the straight.
Small Minds was winning her first stakes and she will be a valuable addition to the Patinack broodmare band when her days winning on the track are over. She is a daughter of Golden Slipper Stakes winner and proven Group 1 sire Canny Lad.
This is also the first Group 1 win a trainer for John Thompson so congratulations to him and all the team.
The fillies were in the care of Thompson’s brother Glenn who predicted the result earlier in the week. “It’s been a good team effort,” Thompson said. “My brother Glenn rang me and said he thought we would run the quinella.
“We thought they would go well, that’s why they were there. It was a great effort seeing she (Small Minds) was three-wide all the way.”
Small Minds (3 f Canny Lad – Princess Marigold, by Yeats) has now four of her 12 starts – the past two at stakes level – and earned $291,445.
She is a half-sister to the stakes winning sprinter Marwin Gold and her fourth-dam is a half-sister to Golden Slipper Stakes winner Hartshill.
